PanicSpace: If you feel alone...
I spent a long time last night going through numerous tumblr pages, based primarily on social anxiety. It was an eye opening experience. There were so many people, both young and old, having their lives torn apart by this social phobia. Seeing talk of struggles during every day…
I’ve been offering some off-the-cuff CBT techniques and general psychological explanation to a girl who reached out to me on Facebook.
Let me take this opportunity to reach out to my followers (and potential followers): if you are suffering from social anxiety or depression and need help, please feel free to use my ask box. I will tell you what I’ve learned from my personal experience and try to contextualize some solutions based on yours.
I will do what I can.Posted on February 1, 2012 via Sanctuary with 5 notes ()

I was down by the East River, eating a burrito, watching the gulls, when I realized something.
I always idolized birds for their ability to fly, as to any land locked human, it seems like infinite freedom; the ability to raise one’s wings to carry one to new (and possibly better) destinations.
But wings do not beat unaided. It requires energy, stamina, and perserverance to maintain lift. It requires a will to keep flapping, both against the wind and with its current, in calm skies and in turbulent weather.
We should all hope to follow the example of birds on the wing. This year, I will do my darndest to.

Tiny Mix Tapes completely pans Lana Del Rey, gives "Born to Die" a 0/5
[Born to Die] is the most unintentionally depressing thing I have listened to in a long time.” –Ben Pearson, TMT
I know a lot of different people. When they are drunk, in the dark of the night they all want the same thing. They all want to be famous. It’s innately human to want other people to bear witness to your life. It’s important for people to be watched. They don’t want to be alone. I don’t want to be alone.” –Lana Del Rey a.k.a. Elizabeth Grant
I lol’d. Then wrote this when people on my facebook got butthurt:
To each his own. My initial reaction sans careful attention was “lmao, Sinatracore” and it left me with the really uncomfortable feeling that I was being lied to. It felt as though I was friends with an art school girl who comes over to my place to have extensive conversations about German Expressionism and the decay of American civilization, and then proceeds to blast off to a frat party riding shotgun in a Bugatti driven by a tattooed meathead with a popped collar and a keg strapped to the top with electrical tape.
On “Video Games” specifically:I hate that song vehemently because it’s a display of her own narcissistic tendency portrayed as self-sacrifical loyalty. “Oh, look at all this wonderful stuff I do for my BF even though all we do is get drunk and play video games. Guess I’ll stay with him anyway even though I’m bored as fuck of our routine. I love him soooo much~~” No, bitch, you love the idea of yourself as a martyr for the relationship, and your inability to leave the dude is evidence not of your love, but your codependency. It represents everything that’s wrong with people who engage in serial monogamy: you have no sense of self outside of the scope of a relationship, so you constantly look for others to define you and give you purpose. Good job, Lana, you’re a real feminist.
…if you’re happy with the product she’s selling, then good for you. You’re who she’s catering to; she wants you to identify with her, so she sells you an experience that you can relate to. Personally, I see that as a perpetuation of generational American narcissism: everyone thinks “oh wow, she gets what it means to be bored but devoted, whattagal”, but really she’s being disingenuous, trying to be the person her boytoy will complacently accept and love so that she can keep living a comfortable lie (“it’s all for you” = “it’s all for me so I don’t have to feel lost and single”; “tell me all the things you wanna do” = “tell me who you want me to be because if you don’t love me, I don’t know who I am”).
If I want to be narcissistic about my music, I listen to classical or post-rock instrumentals so that I can project my own feelings and emotions upon the piece without having to feel like I’m being sold someone else’s.
I don’t anticipate everyone will run out to buy her album. I expect many fans of hers will find my opinions overly critical and snobbish. Fine. I may be a snob, but you’re being lied to by yourself.
This is a capitalist, focus group driven society. Always ask yourself the following question:
What am I being sold here, and why is it being sold to me in this way?Posted on January 30, 2012 ()
