NY’s Tax Overhaul, Said to Raise Taxes on the Rich, Actually Doesn’t
Here is the Times article that shows the effective tax rates with the current surcharge, and under the new tax overhaul. The base rate of the 1% gets an increase, but the elimination of the tax surcharge actually DECREASES their overall tax contribution.
Cuomo has said he believes the tax overhaul will help to close the state’s deficit and stimulate the economy by cutting taxes for the middle class. And it’s true; his tax plan indeed has the wealthy paying more than they would if the surtax had been allowed to expire.
But in reality, as The Times points out a few paragraphs into its story, the cuts for individuals in the lower tax brackets are modest, and the revenue to be produced by the tax-code changes — projected at about $1.9 billion — is about half of the $4 billion raised annually by the expiring surtax.

A young man of color arrested in Union Square earlier today doing literally nothing but crossing the street.
I am fucking shaking with anger. This video shows Union Square earlier today. Clearly there is a protest but the area immediately surrounding the guy with the camera is just observers and people milling around. Watch the guy in the red shirt. From the vimeo link:
As you can see at around 0:30, a young man in a red shirt, Glenn Daniels Jr, is walking near the sidewalk with hundreds of other protestors. The crowd was attempting to cross the street to continue the march south down Broadway from Union Square. Daniels is peacefully walking with a water bottle, not committing any crime. At 0:35 he is approached by an NYPD officer and pushed towards the sidewalk. At 0:38 a senior police officer in a white shirt quickly approaches and grabs Daniels and another young man with a beard and backpack. The lighter skinned man is let go, but Daniels is arrested. The remainder of the video shows NYPD officers cuffing and detaining Daniels.
Unbefuckinglievable. He’s doing fucking nothing.
I’m fuming…another fucking example of pure prejudice and injustice. First Troy Davis, then Reggie Clemons, and now this? WHAT THE FUCK AMERICA.
Fuck cops.

NY Daily News on the Union Square/Occupy Wall Street protests today
The first picture of a man being arrested is the man being arrested on the right hand side of the video here.
In addition to the news in that article:
- That earlier video confirms that the police are using mace on protestors (and, notably, protestors who do not seem to pose a real threat)
- Twitter, the Occupy Wall Street feed, generally unconfirmable sources saying that dozens have been arrested. My best friend’s friend got arrested and maced. Someone else is reporting that they are targeting people with cameras.
Any more info, please share links and post etc. As far as I can tell people are still down there.
ETA: The Occupy Wall Street livestream is giving some good info; just saw video from Union Square of cops arresting civilians, general chaos. It’s extremely difficult to tell what’s happening right now.
